Final Project Requirements

Note: the following material is from an older, outdated version of the web design curriculum pack. Please read about the revised and updated version of our Introduction to Web Design Curriculum.

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Create a list of goals for a new website that are actionable, measurable, testable, related to identified business needs or opportunities, and defined to a level of detail sufficient for system design.

The Environment And You

Your task is to create a new website titled, “The Environment and You”. The first step in this process is to accurately define a goal for the website. The goal should be stated in one sentence. For example, “the goal of this website is to inform users how to enjoy the natural environment of Colorado”. Here are some possible topics you may choose:

  • Outdoor activities.
    • You may focus on a single outdoor activity, such as snowboarding, and provide detailed information on that activity.
    • Or, you may choose to list a number of activities, and provide a little information on each of them.
  • State and/or National Parks
    • Again, you may list several or concentrate on just one
  • Tips for conserving energy
  • “What You Can Do to Save The Environment”
  • New transportation technologies (choose one or several)
    • Hybrid electric vehicles
    • Hydrogen powered vehicles
    • Human powered vehicles
    • Solar powered vehicles
    • Super efficient aircraft (Boeing 787 or Airbus A380)
    • Railroad transportation efficiency
    • History of any of these technologies
    • Most fuel efficient cars
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle – what you can do
  • Global warming
    • What is global warming?
    • Predictions and possible scenarios for the future
    • What can be done to stop it?
  • Alternative energies (you may concentrate on one or several)
    • Wind power
    • Solar power
    • Biodiesel
    • Ethanol
    • Hydro power
  • Oil Spills (Exxon Valdez is a famous example)
  • Colonization of other planets
  • Life on other planets
  • Space exploration
  • Environmental laws and regulations
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • Air Pollution
  • Focus on a particular part of the country or world and inform users about it
    • For example, create a website about the Amazon Rainforest, Antarctica, or Nile River
  • If you’d like, you could take a local perspective on these topics. For example, “wind power in Colorado”
  • New building technologies
    • Active and passive solar heat
    • Heat pumps
    • Green construction
  • Urban sprawl
  • Peak Oil (do a google search if you’re not sure what this is)
  • Hunting and Fishing Regulations
  • Forest fires (you could take a local perspective if you’d like, such as “California Wildfires”)
  • Weather Phenomena and how it affects you (tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes. You could focus on a single event, like Hurricane Katrina).
  • Carbon Offsets
  • Kyoto Protocol
  • Bottled Water
    • How many tons of plastic bottles get thrown away each year?
  • World Hunger
    • Where is it? Why does it exist? What can be done?
  • Genetic Engineering
  • Any new scientific advances you have heard about dealing somehow with the environment
  • Water Quality (you could think local here too – “Water Quality in Lake Superior” for example)
  • Commercial fishing and its effect on the ecosystem
  • Oil drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge
    • For or against?
    • Why?
  • Nuclear Power
  • Alaskan Pipeline
  • How is electricity made? How does it get to your house?
  • Endangered Species
  • Animals
    • Animals in a particular region of the world
    • A website dedicated to a particular animal
  • Coral Reef
  • Oceanography
  • Marine Life
  • Earthquakes and/or Tsunamis
  • Christmas Trees / Types of pine trees / tree farms
  • Geography
    • Rocks and minerals
    • Land formations
    • This could be the geography of a particular place, like the Grand Canyon
  • Sustainable Development
  • Composting
  • Energy Conservation
  • Forestry
  • Recycling
  • Landfills
  • Waste water treatment
  • Asteroids
    • Are possible asteroid impacts a real threat to the earth? What are we doing about it?
  • Volcanoes

If your topic is not included in the list above, you must get teacher approval before developing the website.
